The name means the hill of the garden, the house is neoclassica and was built in 1824 by Walter McGeough on a rise overlooking a gently curving stretch of the river Blackwater The house is set in 200 acres of wooded countryside, it is lit by its own acetylene gas plant, only a few of these still exist.

The house is owned and administered by the National Trust, tours of the house are available in the summer months,
