Cloughmore
(Cloch Mor) is Irish  for
big stone, and this 30-ton granite rock is just that! Perched on
the slopes of Slievemartin, 1000ft above the picturesque village
of Rostrevor, it was deposited there
by retreating glaciers during the Ice Age.
However, local legend tells a different
tale of the giant stone being tossed across Carlingford Lough from
the Cooley mountains opposite during a fight between the legendary
Irish giant Finn McCool and his archrival Ruscaire, the Ice Giant.
If you are in the Rostrevor
area the effort expended to get to it is well rewarded,
from the stones location there are magnificent views across Carlingford
Lough to The Cooley Mountains in County Louth. Looking south you
can see the historic town of Carlingford where King John built a
castle in the early 1200's beyond across Dundalk Bay you can see
the Wicklow Mountains.

Kilbroney
is located just outside Rostrevor. If you are coming from Newry on the
coastal A2 road, go through the town and on the edge of it on the east,
north-east you will see a turning to the left and the relevant sign.
If you are coming from the opposite
direction, from Kilkeel on the A2, just before
you reach the town centre you will see the sign for the park go past the
first carpark and follow the signs for the mountain carpark, there follows
a steep climb to this carpark.
From here you must proceed on foot
for about one mile, parts of this trail are quite steep but there is a
seat situated a little past half way where you can take a rest.
