Athenry Friary.

in County Galway.

Athenry Friary.

There are are an abundance of ecclesiastical remains in the County of Galway, from Samuel Lewis' Topographical Directory of Ireland published in 1837 we learn there were seven ancient round towers in the county; at Kilmacduagh, Ballygaddy, Kilbannon, Meelick, Roscam Murrough, and Ardrahan.

How many of these have survived I'm afraid we don't know, perhaps some one can help?

Athenry Friary.

This Dominican Friary was founded in 1241 by Meiler de Birmingham. The north wall of the choir is all that remains of the original building. The choir and the north arcade were extended about 1324. The church was rebuilt in the fifteenth century when a north wing was added. Renovations were carried out in the seventeenth century.

Interesting snippet about the de Birmingham's.
