This battle was a failed attempt to recover the town of Dublin from the Vikings King Sitric who had captured it and the surrounding area in 919. Sitric set sail for England to assist his brother Ragnald in an attempt to capture the kingdom of Mersia.

Niall Glúndubh siezed this opportunity to attack Dublin, he was met by Sitric's sons and suffered a crushing defeat, he was killed along with his stepson and heir Conchobhar, along with many other chieftains.
