The Marriage of Strongbow and Aoife.

 

 

The painting below is by the Irish artist Daniel Maclise (1808-70) Maclise was born in County Cork, after a period as a portrait artist, he began painting historical scenes. The painting below is testament to his sympathy with the Nationalist cause. It depicts the marriage of Richard Fitz Gilbert de Clare (Strongbow) to Aofie daughter of Dermot MacMurrough deposed king of Leinster, who had invited Strongbow to Ireland to help him regain his lost kingdom. This act led to the Normans seizing three quarters of Ireland.

The painting hangs in the National Gallery of Ireland, Dublin.
