Seamus Heaney is an Irish poet, who won the
1995 Nobel Prize for literature. His poetry is infused with images
of Irish rural life, as well as the historical and social aspects
of life in Ireland.
After the publication of Wintering Out in
1972 and North in 1975 Heaney came to be highly regarded in contemporary
English literature. Heaney's later works included Station Island
1984, The Haw Lantern 1987, and Seeing Things 1991.
Heaney was born in County Londonderry. He
was educated at St. Columb's College, Londonderry, and Queen's University,
Belfast. In 1966 he began lecturing at Queen's University. In the
same year, he published his first major collection of poetry, Death
of a Naturalist. In 1972, Heaney moved to the Republic of Ireland,
where he devoted his time to writing. From 1989 to 1994, he was
professor of poetry at Oxford University. |
