Kenmare is a small market town, famed for its beautiful location at the head of the sea inlet called the Kenmare River, it is also a noted center for sea angling. The town was founded by Sir William Petty in 1670.

For anyone with an interest in history there is much to explore in the area, about 1.5 miles SE of the town close to Sheen bridge is a holy well and the remains of a church dedicated to St Fionan. 1.5 miles W is a castle that once was the stronghold of O'Sullivan Mor's, while five miles WSW is the remains of the MacCraith O'Sullivan castle of Cappancushy. The ruins of the O'Mahony castle of Dromore is located a further mile WSW

There is a motor museum close to the town. The famous battle of Callan took place near the junction of the rivers Roughty and Shaleny when Finghan MacCarthy halted the Norman's passage. There are also some prehistoric remains in the area.
