Ecclesiastical Sites in Co Leitrim.

This stone cross is believed to date from the 9th or 10th centuries, it stands in the village of Tullaghan where it was brought to save it from coastal erosion, it is thought to have once belonged to a monastery which may have been claimed by the Atlantic.

The Costello Chapel is the smallest in Ireland, and possibly the second smallest in the world. It was erected by Edward Costello in memory of his wife Mary Josephine Costello a native of county Longford, who died on 6th October 1887, at the age of 47.

The chapel was dedicated on 22nd April 1689, a Requiem Mass was offered and Mary Josephine was laid to rest in a sunken vault to the left of the door. Edward died on 7th March 1891 at the age of 68, his remains were interred in a sunken vault to the right of the door.

Edwars was a merchant and well respected by the community, the couple had no children.

Located about three Km from Ballinamore, the medeival ruins of Fenagh Abbey are thought to have been built on an early Christiam monestry founded by St. Caillin. After the reformation the abbey was used for Church of Ireland worship until a new church was built nearby sometime around 1798.
