Carrick on Shannon.

Carrick-on-Shannon, the main administrative centre, is also a Tourist centr, from here people explore the most beautiful reaches of the Shannon in cruisers, or fish in Lough Allen, which is said to have the best pike fishing in the country, Lough Melvin is another important angling centre for trout and salmon.

Carrick courthouse was the scene of a mass execution in 1798, when the United Irishmen were defeated by the English.

The British commander Lord Cornwallis, ordered that 17 captives were to be hanged, the prisoners were forced to draw pieces of paper from a hat on which 17 had death written. Those unfortunate enough to draw these pieces of paper were hanged outside the court

 

 

Drumshanbo.

Drumshanbo is a quaint village at the south end of Lough Allen, its situation make it ideal for the fisherman with about ten other lakes within a short drive. For those desiring a pleasant hike The Leitrim Way goes north from the town between Lough Allen and The Iron Mountains (Three major peaks Slieve Anierin, Bencroy and Slievanakilla) it joins the Cavan Way at the village of Dawra.

Six miles NW of the town there were coal pits where small scale mining was carried on, some of the coal was used to fuel a power station. (1989)
