Knock Shrine and Folk Museum.

(Knock hill.)

This is a pilgrimage centre which grew from an apparition of the Virgin Mary, Saint Joseph and John the Evangelist, claimed to have been seen by a group of villagers in August 1879. Behind the church where the apparitions appeared are the glass enclosed statues of the Virgin and two saints.

A basilica was built in 1974, and a High Cross erected to commemorate the visit by Pope John Paul in 1979. The museum is concerned mostly with the shrine, although there there are items connected with the local area, among the items is the chair used by the pope.

There is also reference to Monsignor James Hornan who promoted the papal visit, and also the construction of the local airport which has contributed significantly to the prosperity of the area.

Knock Shrine is situated on the N17 mid way between Galway and Sligo.

Clew Bay Heritage Centre.

The Clew Bay Heritage Centre situated on Westport quay, traces the history of Westport and the Clew Bay area from pre Christian to the present time. Artifacts, documents and photographs connected with the general Westport area provide a basis for the presentation of local history, customs and traditions.

Foxford Woolen Mills Visitor Centre.

Foxford Woolen Mills Visitor Centre hosts two Art Galleries. On the first floor An Grianan Gallery shows the work of local artists, much of the work depicts the beautiful scenery of the county. All paintings are for sale.

Ten to twelve exhibitions by professional artists are hosted each year ranging in content from paintings to sculpture photography and pottery.

In the jewelry workshop on the first floor Claire and Michael can be seen handcrafting a range of gold and silver jewelry.

Christmas Craft Fair

Each year the Foxford Woolen Mills Visitor Centre hosts a craft fair displaying locally produced handmade goods.

The Michael Davitt Museum.

The Michael Michael davitt. Davitt Museum is housed in the restored church in the village of Straide, County Mayo. Michael Davitt was christened in this church in 1846 and is buried in the grounds of the 13th Century Straide Abbey, beside the Museum.

The Michael Davitt Museum contains an extensive collection of documents, photos, Land Acts, letters, postcards, posters and other items connected with Davitt's life. There is also the excellent audio visual and knowledgeable and friendly staff are on hand to give you a guided your which encompasses Davitt's grave and also Straide Abbey, if desired.
