Roscommon Friary.

(St Coman's wood.)

This Dominican Friary was founded in 1253 by Felim O'Connor, king of Connaught. There is an effigy of the founder in the north wall, this dates from the late thirteenth century, it was destroyed by fire in 1308. It was rebuilt in the late 15th century, much of what is seen today dates from that period.

The remains of O'Connor are said to rest in a tomb on the left of the church, a defaced carving on the tomb is thought to be of him. A series of eight gallowglasses (Scottish mercenary soldiers) surround the base of the tomb.
