The
town of Mohill exudes an aura of old world charm, a stroll along its streets
reveal quaint shops and bars that have changed little in many years. In
the town centre is a life size bust of blind harpist Turlough
O'Carolan (1670-1738)
One of Leitrim's most
notorious characters William Sydney Clements, 3rd Earl of Leitrim lived
near the town in Lough Rynn House, for various reasons he was much hated
in the area, to the extent that in 1878 he was ambushed and assassinated.
After his death in the House of Commons he was accused of exercising the
ancient Norman right of 'droit de signeur' The right to sleep with a bride
on her wedding night before her husband.
Lough Rynn house built in 1832 has
been fully restored, it stands in 100 acres of ornamental gardens, woodland
and pasture, there is a 600 acre lake with a turreted lakeside house from
which there are magnificent views of the countryside.The three acre terraced
wall garden built in 1859 once supplied produce to the mansion. The arboretum
contains many fine specimens including the oldest monkey puzzle tree in
Ireland (Araucaria) a tulip tree and some magnificent Californian redwood
trees.
The Earls of Leitrim once held 90,000
acres (36,422 Hectares) in four counties.

There
is an old sawmill on the estate, near this is a picnic area with
way marked trails leading to viewing points offering unparalleled
views across the lakes and countryside.
On one of the lakes is a crannog
(Lake dwelling) dating back 4,000 years, also within the estate
set on a hilltop is a druidic altar, on which it is said that human
sacrifices were made.
