Boyle Abbey.

This Cistercian abbey known as 'Mainister na Buaille' was founded in 1161 and colonizes from Mellifont, its patrons were the MacDermotts. The cruciform abbey church, built in the Transitional style, it is typically Cistercian having a short square choir and two chapels along the east face of the north and south transepts.

The building contains a mixture of pointed and rounded arches, as well as round headed and lancet windows, and square and round pillar's. The east gable wall is pierced by high triple lancets. Over the west door is a single lancet under an arch decorated with chevrons. The original claustral buildings with the exception of the sacristy have all disappeared.

The abbey situated on the north side of Boyle town is the burial place of Donnchadh Mor O'Daly a famous medieval poet, who may have been Abbot there. Although badly damage by Cromwell's army, the Abbey is one of the best preserved in the country.
